India’s data centre industry is expected to attract investments worth Rs 70,000-Rs 72,000 crore over the next five to 10 years, driven by large corporate groups and Cloud services providers, according to an estimate by ratings agency Ind-Ra.

Data generated can be categorized into three sources: machine, transactional and social. Since, the past few years there has been an exponential growth in data consumption and generation and there no sign of it slowing down.

The pandemic fast-tracked digital adoption across the world, including India for business that wished to remain functioning and later profitable. This increased the demand for flexibility regarding reliability, redundancy, resiliency, and scalability among third party data hosting services like colocation services to facilitate business continuity.

Infrastructure status would allow data centre service providers easy and increased access to credit from national and international lenders and financing for longer tenure at competitive terms.

Datacentres and energy storage systems including dense charging infrastructure and grid-scale battery systems will be included in the harmonized list of infracture.

The 2022 Union Budget reflects the Government’s commitment to digitalisation as an integral instrument of growth and inclusion in the country as well as to help India further cement our leadership position on the global technology services map. More specifically, the attribution of “infrastructure status” to the Data Centres is indeed a welcome move.

GDC India said that it is working on new greenfield facilities and expansion in Noida, Pune, Chennai and other cities. The company is also evaluating expanding in tier II cities beyond the nine cities where we are already present.

India has emerged as one of the fast-growing data centre markets owing to a massive and still-growing internet user base, the proliferation of data, and the creation of a conducive environment through the Government’s Digital India mission.
